Seagull Coastline S6 Slim CW Spruce QI Guitar

Seagull Coastline S6 Slim CW Spruce QI Guitar Review

Seagull Coastline S6 Slim CW Spruce QI Guitar Feature

  • Made in North America
  • Select Pressure Tested Top
  • Double Action Truss Rod
  • Tapered Headstock for precise and stable tuning and great for open tunings
  • Tusq nut and compensated saddle for better intonation

Seagull Coastline S6 Slim CW Spruce QI Guitar –
Bright Sound with a Traditional Feel

The Coastline S6 Slim CW Spruce QI is an ideal choice for players who prefer the brighter (more high frequencies) sound of a Select Solid Spruce top, as well as the great feel and superb sound provided by a hand finished neck with a more traditional nut width feel. The cutaway and Quantum I electronics also make this a great choice for the gigging musician.

Coastline Series

The guitars that make up the Seagull Coastline series represent one of the world's outstanding values in acoustic guitars. The back and sides of the Coastline series models are made from a three-layer lamination of Wild Cherry wood. With a sound that lands somewhere between the mellow tone of a Mahogany guitar and the bright sound of Maple, Wild Cherry has proven itself to be an excellent tone wood. Grown locally, Wild Cherry is also an ecologically friendly choice. Coastline series guitars feature very smooth necks made from Silver Leaf Maple.

The Compound Curve Top

The guitar top is the part of the instrument that most affects the sound. It is also the most delicate part of any high quality acoustic guitar. The grade and thickness of the wood used (solid spruce), as well as the bracing structure, have a huge impact on the instrument's sound. The idea of applying an arch or a curve to the top is appealing because the added strength of an arched top should allow for the use of a thinner and more lightly braced top. While this is true, there remains a trade-off in applying a curve to the entire top. The most active part of the top is the area centered on the bridge. Applying a curve to this part of the top restricts movement resulting in a loss of dynamic range. On the other hand, the area of the top above the sound hole moves minimally but is problematic because it tends to sink if the guitar dries out even slightly. This tendency is also encouraged by downward pressure from the fingerboard resting on top of it. The solution is a top that has a compound curve.

In the Seagull Performer's design the top is arched slightly in the area above the sound hole and levels out in the area around the bridge. The compound curve top produces excellent stability in the upper part of the guitar top and the power and projection made possible by leaving the top flat below the sound hole flat. With the weak area above the sound hole stabilized, it is possible to make the rest of the top even more active with a new bracing design that allows unprecedented control over the top vibration. The bracing for the Seagull Performer Cutaway Flame Maple High-Gloss QI Guitar is quarter-sawn spruce, scalloped and carved to conform exactly to the curvature of the tops.

Godin QI Electronics

The Godin EPM Quantum acoustic guitar system is simple in design and outstanding in performance. This single source system features an exceptionally responsive saddle transducer carefully matched to side mount electronics with rotary volume, bass, and treble controls. The electronics and controls are packaged in a small and easy to use format complemented with a finely crafted pewter cover plate. In combination with the transducer, the EQ control range and frequency content have been specifically contoured to provide a very rich and full sound reproduction resulting in performance seen only in far more complex systems.

A History of Quality

In 1982 Robert Godin and a few friends produced the first Seagull guitars in the Village of LaPatrie, Quebec. The concept for the Seagull guitar was to take the essential components of the best hand-crafted guitars (such as solid tops and beautiful finishes) and build these features into guitars that could be priced within the reach of working musicians. Of course there is much more to a great guitar than a solid top with a special finish, so we produced this illustrated guide to help you gain some understanding of the basic elements of a great sounding acoustic guitar.

The Seagull story wouldn't be complete without mentioning La Patrie. La Patrie is a small village in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This is where the first Seagulls were made in the early eighties. Today, La Patrie has a population of about 475 and about half of these people are guitar builders. These folks take a great deal of pride in the guitars they build. Pick one up and you'll see why.

The Taylor 100 Series
Tone and playability are hallmarks of Taylor guitars, and you'll find the 100 Series delivers plenty of each. Sporting a solid Sitka spruce top and sapele laminate back and sides, the redesigned 100 Series now features both Dreadnought and Grand Auditorium shapes, along with cutaway and Taylor electronics options. Value, yes. Compromise, no.

Sitka Spruce Top
Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis) grows in a coastal "pocket" from Northern California to Alaska. This dense, straight-grained wood has the highest strength and elasticity-to-weight ratio among available tonewoods, an attribute that makes it an ideal material not only for our soundboards, but for our internal bracing, as well. Sitka produces a slightly brighter tone than does Engelmann.

Sapele Laminate Back/Sides
This exceptional, mahogany-like wood grows throughout the tropical rain forests of Nigeria and the Ivory Coast of Africa. Ever since we introduced it in 1998, its legion of fans has grown exponentially. As a tonewood, it's denser and harder than mahogany, so it has a crisper, clearer, brighter, "pop"-ier sound than its more familiar counterpart. Loud and robust, with a lovely ribboned grain, sapele has been used by Spanish guitar makers for many years.

Varnish Finish
A durable varnish finish offers protection, good looks, and a smooth feel to the touch. The spruce top's beauty shines right through.

Dreadnought Body Shape
The original Dreadnought acoustic guitar appeared early in the 20th Century, and its no-frills, no-nonsense shape made it a logical namesake of the huge battleships of that day. Most subsequent Dreadnoughts, including Taylor's, have been derivative of that early design. In 1997, however, Bob Taylor re-designed the Taylor Dreadnought by softening the curves at the top and bottom and generally refining its overall shape. In 2003, gloss-finish Dreadnoughts also underwent bracing refinements that substantially increased their overall volume and bass response, without sacrificing Taylor's signature balance and clarity. Dreadnought six-strings shine as "plectrum" or "rhythm" guitars because they respond well to flatpicking or light-to-heavy strumming.

ES-T Pickup
Inspired by Taylor's Expression System technology, the Expression System Transducer, or ES-T, is a single-source, under-saddle transducer with individual elements for each string. (The ES-T was originally called the ES Element, but the name was changed to avoid confusion with another product.) The ES-T has an onboard preamp and the same active controls found on the full Expression System. Featuring a custom-voiced EQ and dynamic response, the system is powered by a 9-volt battery, with a battery life LED power indicator (which is lit when the battery is being used). The pickup also has a Phase switch for feedback control, which is located on the preamp board inside the soundhole.

Chrome-Plate Tuners
Taylor Tuners continue the industry-leading 18:1 gear ratio that they've been using, yet yield even greater precision with the help of a manufacturing process that employs the same gear-cutting machines used by Swiss watchmakers. The more precisely-machined gears virtually eliminate the slight "slop", or slack, typical among tuners, which makes it even easier for Taylor owners to get--and stay--in tune. Taylor Tuners also feature an elegant aesthetic touch, with the Taylor logo cleanly etched on the back. The 110e's full-voiced tone can now be amplified with the Taylor ES-T transducer pickup. This solid spruce top Dreadnought truly delivers the Taylor experience.

Barcelona D200 Full-Size Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar with Mahogany Back and Sides - Natural

Barcelona D200 Full-Size Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar with Mahogany Back and Sides - Natural Review

See more picture

Barcelona D200 Full-Size Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar with Mahogany Back and Sides - Natural Feature

  • Ideal for beginners who are looking for an attractive dreadnought-style guitar at an easily affordable price
  • Durable construction, chrome-plated hardware, and tonewoods normally found on more expensive guitars
  • Comes in a variety of colors: natural, black, cherry sunburst, flame yellow sunburst, transparent red, and transparent green
  • Full-size guitar that measures 41 inches in length
  • Rosewood fretboard, spruce top, and mahogany back and sides; gold-plated hardware
A step up from Barcelona's D100 series of acoustic guitars, the D200 guitars have the same attractive design but are constructed with better materials. In particular, they boast mahogany tonewood, gold-plated hardware, and more decorative binding. Like the D100 series, the D200 series guitars are oriented toward beginners who are looking for an eye-catching dreadnought-style guitar at an easily affordable price. With durable construction and tonewoods normally found on more expensive guitars, the D200 makes for a great value. Moreover, it comes in a variety of colors (natural, black, cherry sunburst, flame yellow sunburst, transparent red, transparent green), so you can pick exactly the right guitar for you.

The D200 guitars have a dreadnought body type and are considered full size, as they measure 41 inches in length. They are constructed with a rosewood fretboard, spruce top, and mahogany back and sides. The hardware is gold plated and designed to withstand tarnish. The finish is sleek and colorful, ensuring that these guitars look as great as they sound.

At this price, it would be difficult to find a better value than Barcelona's D200 series of acoustic guitars. If you're in the market for an easily affordable acoustic guitar oriented toward beginners and students, look no further. It would be difficult to find a better value guitar at this price.

However, if you'd prefer to spend a bit less, consider Barcelona's D100 series. A step down from the D200 series, the D100 acoustic guitars come in the same variety of colors. Barcelona's standard line of beginner guitars, the D100 series is constructed of linden rather than mahogany tonewood, chrome- rather than gold-plated hardware, and have less decorative bindings.
